With VeloDrum SafeClosure, packaging machinery specialist Greif-Velox is introducing a patent-pending solution that fully automates a previously manual step in drum filling: opening and closing fine-thread drum closures before and after filling. Greif-Velox will present the new solution at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM 2026, taking place in Nuremberg from September 29 to October 1, 2026.
Turning a Manual Step into a Monitored Process
Until now, fine-thread drum closures have predominantly had to be opened manually during drum filling and closed again after filling – a time-consuming process that can only be standardized to a limited extent. With VeloDrum SafeClosure, Greif-Velox transforms this step into a fully automated, monitored process. Positioning, tool engagement and tightening are performed without manual intervention. The result is reproducible operation and greater process reliability.
Six Monitored Steps
The monitored process comprises six steps. First, a vision-based system determines the position of the bung opening. A centering ring then moves onto the bung opening before a positive-pressure test confirms correct positioning and sealing. The screwdriver subsequently engages with the closure and opens it under torque monitoring.
After filling, the system positions the closure again and tightens it automatically. Finally, the monitored torque and screw-in depth parameters confirm that the closure has been tightened correctly. If the system detects incorrect engagement or tightening, an integrated ejection mechanism places the plug next to the bung opening in a controlled manner.
Also Suitable for Plastic Closures
A particular feature of the system is its controlled handling of plastic closures, whose material properties present specific challenges for reliable automated tightening. A springless pneumatic system securely holds the closure in the closure holder and reduces the risk of jamming when the screwdriver retracts.
Flexible torque settings enable adaptation to different closure and drum variants. VeloDrum SafeClosure is designed for steel drums with plastic or steel closures featuring 2-inch threads, as well as plastic drums with BCS 56 x 4 and BCS 70 x 6 closures. Reconditioned drums can also be processed, provided that the drum surface and bung opening are intact.
The system can be integrated into automated line concepts, is designed for retrofitting into existing systems and can also be used in hazardous areas. Typical applications include the chemical and food industries, contract filling operations and drum manufacturers.

On display at the booth: Essential Line, Live Demonstrations and Partner Solutions
In addition to VeloDrum SafeClosure, Greif-Velox will present its range of solutions for filling, bagging and palletizing powders, granulates and liquids at POWTECH TECHNOPHARM 2026.
The solutions on display include the Essential Line, featuring the preconfigured R-DOS Essential, BVP Essential, VeloVac Essential and ValvoSeal Essential systems. The ValvoSeal closing technology will be demonstrated live using sample bags. The presentation will be complemented by co-exhibitor dy-pack, showcasing vacuum-packed silica bags.
Cooperation with Bizerba: Robot-Assisted Labeling for Future-Proof Identification Concepts
Together with co-exhibitor Bizerba, Greif-Velox will present the GREIF-VELOX VeloFlexLabeler by Bizerba at the trade fair. Based on the Bizerba GLM-P drum labeler, the system is a robot-assisted labeling solution for drums, IBCs and pallets.
In a live demonstration, the two companies will showcase the seamless interaction between filling and labeling. The drum labeler generates the appropriate label for each filling operation, after which a robotic arm applies it directly to the drum. This creates an automated identification process without an additional manual step, supporting traceability and process reliability throughout the production chain.
