Which raw materials, processes, and coating systems make a demonstrable contribution to greater sustainability? This question is addressed in the newly published reference book *Sustainable Coating Systems—Raw Materials, Technologies, and Environmental Assessment of Modern Coatings*, published by Vogel Verlag. Experts from the European Center for Dispersion Technologies (EZD) in Selb played a key role in its development, contributing their many years of research and practical experience in the fields of coatings, paints, and finishes.
Raw Materials, Technologies, and Environmental Assessment of Modern Coatings
Sustainability has long since become a key driver of innovation and a competitive factor for the coatings industry. Companies face the challenge of meeting environmental requirements, regulatory standards, and high technical performance criteria in equal measure. This reference book provides a comprehensive overview of modern coating systems and demonstrates how their environmental impacts can be systematically assessed.
The focus is on established and forward-looking methods such as carbon footprint and life cycle analysis (LCA). Readers gain practical knowledge about sustainable raw materials, energy-efficient manufacturing processes, resource-conserving application technologies, and concepts for paint removal and the circular economy. The book thus provides a solid foundation for selecting, evaluating, and strategically implementing sustainable coating solutions throughout the entire value chain.
In addition to the importance of sustainability and its objective assessment, the book also delves into technical issues: from the components of sustainable paints and coatings, through their energy-efficient production and application, to coating and paint removal methods that minimize material wear.
Combining Environmental Responsibility, Resource Efficiency, and Technical Performance
“The development of sustainable coating systems is far more than just a current trend. It is an essential prerequisite for combining environmental responsibility, resource efficiency, and technical performance. As a core competency of the EZD, this topic has been a central focus of our research and industrial projects for years. This reference book is intended to help convey knowledge and further drive innovation in this field,” explains Felipe Wolff Fabris, site manager of the European Center for Dispersion Technologies (EZD) in Selb.
For many years, the EZD has successfully supported companies in the development and optimization of dispersions, which include paints, coatings, printing inks, and adhesives, among others. Its range of services includes research and development projects, material and formulation optimization, analysis and characterization, sustainability assessments, and supporting industrial partners in the implementation of innovative coating and formulation concepts.
Another key focus at the EZD is continuing education. Through the close integration of scientific research and industrial application, the EZD helps bring sustainable technologies into practice more quickly.
With this new reference book, experts from industry, research, and development now have access to a comprehensive resource that explains technological concepts in an accessible way while also offering concrete guidance for the development of sustainable coating solutions.
